America’s 10 worst airport websites: No.10 – Greater Rochester International Airport

Greater Rochester International Airport (read our review) is a major public airport in Rochester city in the state of New York. Their official website is actually a sub-section of the official website of Monroe County.

Well, when the only official online information for an airport as large as Greater Rochester International can be found amidst the tons of irrelevant (to any airport passenger) information of a website of local interest such as Monroe County’s official site… we’ve got a problem, folks!

Because, you see, when someone tries to browse the airport’s page, they will sooner or later land on pages of no interest to them such as web pages on:

  • how to find a local flu clinic
  • how to pay your taxes online to Monroe County
  • County Executive Maggie Brooks
  • and much more! Information nobody travelling through Greater Rochester International needs/wants/cares to know! What is more, the way back to the airport’s sub-page is obscure and hard to find through the County’s site!

Below is a screenshot of a page you can easily end up on as you are browsing for useful (for airport passengers) information. I have marked with red some information of absolutely no interest to airport passengers (and finding your way back to the airport’s pages isn’t easy!):

But wait – that’s not all!

There is no dedicated web page on the accessibility features of the airport anywhere on the site.

However, a dedicated “web accessibility and standards” page referring to the accessibility of the website – not the airport – is easily accessible from each and every page of the whole site. Oh, the irony! At least the content of this “web accessibility and standards” is good for buzzword bingo if read out loud!

If someone is persistent enough they will find that what little information there is available on the airport’s accessibility is not easily accessible at all.

Those few words (around 150) on the airport’s accessibility features can be found towards the bottom of their airport services web page.

Greater Rochester International Airport’s website (which is actually a sub-page) is hard to navigate and will cause headaches if you click the wrong link and get stuck amidst information on Monroe County’s affairs. I’ve decided to include it in America’s 10 worst airport websites for the following reasons:

    • No dedicated website, just a sub-page on the official website of Monroe County
    • No dedicated accessibility or special services page
    • Maddeningly little actual airport accessibility information (154 words all in all) while the website features an extensive “web accessibility and standards” web page which can be accessed easily
    • Easy to become confused while browsing the website and end up reading irrelevant (to you) information

This is No.10 in our America’s 10 worst airport websites series
